The China Opportunity
The global economy has experienced an unprecedented growth over the past 20 years. One of the drivers was the globalization that unfolded after the end of the Cold War. In this process, hundreds of millions of simple rice farmers became bourgeois and evolved from rural peasants to well-situated urban citizens. In China alone, a middle class of 500 million developed. Size does matter sometimes if you consider that:
- The top 25% of the Chinese population with the brightest minds is larger than the entire population of North America
- China will shortly become the largest English speaking nation in the world
- Every 5 minutes there are 244 babies born in China compared to 60 in the US
Regarding economic growth, China has been one of the leading countries worldwide during the last 10 years. Even under the difficult circumstances of the financial and economic crisis of 2009, China is forecast to maintain its GDP growth of 9%.
China's importance hardly needs to be mentioned at this point. The pressing questions are now: What does China's development specifically mean for Skillnet’s clients' businesses and how can one take advantage of the China opportunity?
Skillnet’s China Story
Skillnet became active in Asia in the mid-90s, supporting clients during their early steps in entering the Asian markets. Skillnet worked in this capacity in different countries such as Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
After years of implementing a successful client-driven "parachute approach", Skillnet proactively unfolded a dedicated China strategy by setting up a 100% subsidiary company in Shanghai subsequent to China joining the WTO.
Since then, Skillnet has been working with a dedicated Asian team and benefiting from a local set-up. Given its early-mover advantange, Skillnet has had the opportunity to build a very strong local relationship network as well as deep coverage of the Chinese TIMES industry. Based on its track record, Skillnet has supported major TIMES clients in over 200 assignments regarding their China strategy/implementation including Axel Springer, Bertelsmann, CISCO, Deutsche Börse, Deutsche Telekom, Endemol, the European Commission, IBM, Sal. Oppenheim, and Siemens. In the upcoming Chinese M&A/IPO market, Skillnet has demonstrated its corporate finance expertise in over 40 Chinese corporate finance transactions in the TIMES industry.
